Turn to Jesus first.
This is Christianity 101. It’s very easy to talk about putting Jesus first, but when we get distracted by insurmountable problems, we often turn to the people in our lives to get un-stuck.
There is a time and place for turning to people. In fact, I spent the past two articles on my blog focused on finding “your person,” someone who understands your unique position as church planter wife. But people can only do so much for us. They are 100 % on the path toward disappointing us, not being there for us, and saying the wrong things at the wrong time, and never realizing how much they are hurting us in the process.
Early in my life, I used to call my best friend whenever trouble came my way. If she wasn’t home or didn’t answer my call, I’d turn to Jesus in prayer and soak up God’s promises to heal my hurting heart. I had it so backwards, and I drove her away with too many heavy conversations. She couldn’t handle it, and she shouldn’t have had to try. I tend to do the same thing to my husband. The problem is, when I place my hope in him and the answers and comfort he can give me, I don’t end up in a good place. I do not want to be guilty of turning my friends or husband into my idols, so I must turn to Jesus first.
Why can we turn to Jesus first? He is the only one with the power to follow through on the glorious promises he has made to us, His children.
Maybe you’re feeling like me right now…in a place where you need some encouragement. For me, I just moved to a new city, switched jobs, and my kids both started new schools. There is a lot going on! There is no shame in admitting my need for help, but where I turn to push out the darkness settling around me, matters.
Let’s look at a few of God’s promises to us in the Bible. Where else could we possibly go? These are the words of eternal life…
When you turn to Jesus first, He is your safe place.
For who is God, but the Lord? And who is a rock, except our God? This God is my strong refuge and has made my way blameless. (2 Samuel 22:32)
When you turn to Jesus first, you draw near to a God who knows your troubles.
You have kept count of my tossings; put my tears in your bottle. Are they not in your book? (Psalm 56:8 ESV)
When you turn to Jesus first, you are understood and empowered.
Have you not known? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength. (Isaiah 40:28-29 ESV)
When you turn to Jesus first, you will have everything you need.
And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. To our God and Father be glory forever and ever. Amen. (Philippians 4:19-20 ESV)
When we are tempted to turn somewhere else first, let’s remember how sweet it is to sit at the feet of our Savior. He is the one who knows every tear you shed, every victory dance twirled in private, and every longing in your heart.
Dear church planter wife, go to Jesus first. There is no sweeter place.
